Oakwood 18 Hole Couples Golf League

Men’s White Tee Policy

December 5, 2008

Whereas requests for such a policy have been received by the Board of Directors from various members, the Board approves and recommends adopting this policy.

Basis for this recommendation

All men members are currently required to play from the green tees regardless of their handicap.

As of November 15, 2008, of the approximate 100 men members from the 2007-2008 membership roster, twenty have indexes of 20 and above.  And, there is strong indication that more such couples would join our group with such a policy.

Other Oakwood men’s golf groups have adopted a “white tee policy”; MOGA uses an index of 16 and above.  A like organization, the Ironwood Couples, uses a handicap index of 20.8 and above.  Some of our members who play in those groups are required to adjust to “green tees” to participate in our events.

The Board of Directors believes that the tradition and spirit of our league will be enhanced by such a policy which would offer greater enjoyment and sense of accomplishment to those men whose capability is more suited to the white tees.

How the policy will work

Rule 1: Men whose current handicap index at the time of an event is equal to 20.8 or above will be assigned to play from the white tees (a man may opt out of this rule by notifying the president of his choice to be assigned to the green tees for all events).  Men whose current handicap index at the time of an event is below 20.8 will be assigned to play from the green tees.  Each player’s course handicap will be based on the assigned tees.

Rule 2: Pairings and flight assignments will continue to be prepared as in the past, that is, based on couple total index without regard to tee assignments.  Scorecards will be marked to indicate “men white tee” assignment.  Score posting will be done for the tees used.

Rule 3: The “honor system” applies to this policy.  Men are expected to play from the white tees at any event only if they are assigned to do so.

Rule 4: A man, who is not assigned to play from the white tees, playing any holes from the white tees will cause that team to be disqualified from that event.

Rule 5: At any event, any foursome may contain men using both the green tees and the white tees.

Rule 6: At an event using a course rotation where women use the white tees, men and women may be playing from the same tees.

Rule 7: This policy is instituted on an experimental basis and will be effective upon approval by the Board of Directors and a vote by the membership present at a designated event dinner.  Upon such approval, the policy shall be in effect until revoked or amended by the Board of Directors and a vote of the membership.

Approved by the Membership on December 5, 2008.
